As important as daily exercise is for our overall well being, it can be difficult to get started on a fitness routine. This can be especially true if you haven’t been very active in a while. Fitness activities can become tedious and mundane. It doesn’t have to be that way though! Here are five super simple tips to help you get started.
1) Warm up! Always begin any fitness regimen with a warm up such as stretching or light cardio. Not only will this prevent injury but it will help your body benefit more from the exercise. Five to ten minutes is all you need to get going and your body will thank you.
2) Mix it up! Try different activities. Doing the same routine every day not only gets boring but will yield you lackluster results. In essence you start to “train” your body to the specific activity and remove the shock aspect of working out which helps in increasing muscle tone.
3) Just do it! Even if you are feeling sluggish or tired, give it a go anyway. Exercise is energizing so just going at it can give you the boost you need to complete your routine. You’ll be surprised at how much energy you’ll have after a workout. Although getting started can be difficult, finishing becomes easier once you get on the way.
4) Schedule your workout! Treat your fitness routine as a integral part of your everyday life. It should be! Schedule your regimen as if it were a doctor’s appointment or meeting. If you actually commit to a time frame by writing it in your planner or calendar, you’re more likely to go through with it because it’s right there every time you look at your schedule. This makes it a tad more difficult to just forego the activity in lieu of “more important” things. Your fitness and health are very important to your longevity and should be treated as such.
5) Enjoy yourself! Too often times we think of exercise as requiring expensive equipment or memberships. Simply not true. Walking to the store instead of driving is a great way to get your daily exercise AND clear your head. Jogging, playing a sport, running around with the kids and even cleaning the house all add to your daily fitness routine. Vacuuming alone can really get your blood pumping! Have fun with it. Go roller blading, jump rope, play with a hula hoop!
At the end of the day, only you can make yourself exercise. The benefits are numerous. Increased energy, longer life, less sickness and so much more. Hopefully, these five tips help you get started but remember that knowledge is power. Research!
