Ambien is relatively a new drug used for treating symptoms of insomnia. It is chemically different from other sleep disorder medication such as Dalmane and Helcion.
Ambien must be taken just before going to bed as it works very quickly and effectively. The doses must be strictly followed as directed by the doctor for avoiding associated complications. The doses may differ upon the symptoms and age. The recommended dose for adults is around 10 milligrams per day before sleep. However, the doses of Ambien should never exceed this amount or this may be lowered for some who suffer liver or kidney issues. For older adults, the prescribed doses are 5 milligrams per day. This drug should not be used for treating children as these have not been tested for safety concerning children below the age of 18.
On missing a dose never double the doses. It is always recommended to skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Overdosing with Ambien could result in over sleepiness and light coma conditions. If the patient is also being treated for any other symptom and the associated drugs do affect the central nervous symptoms then it can result in fatal complications. Under these conditions, the patient should seek medical help immediately.
The side effects associated with Ambien cannot be anticipated and should be reported to the doctor immediately. The common side effects include dizziness, daytime drowsiness, drugged feeling, nausea, headaches, allergies and indigestion. On using these medications continuously, they can reduce their healing abilities. Also its prolonged usage can make you its dependent. When beginning to treat with Ambien one should consider noting the effects on the next day. If some side effects such as dizziness or drowsiness start affecting you then its better to consult your doctor for adjusting the doses. Additionally, alcoholic beverages are strongly prohibited when being treated with Ambien.
When you are pregnant or planning for the same then it is important to consult your doctor. It has been seen that pregnant women getting treated with hypnotic or sedative drugs show withdrawal symptoms after delivery. They may also seem to be flaccid or limp. This drug is also not recommended for treating nursing women as Ambien could pass onto breast milk and harm the infant.
Sleep disorders are generally temporary and gets treated within a short treatment period. These disorders that last longer should be consulted for some other medical issues. In case, an individual uses this drug for more than 8-10 days then this should be immediately consulted with the doctor.
These drugs should be stored at room temperature and away from moisture and direct heat.
