Amitriptyline Side Effects : Effective Antidepressant Drug and Associating Precautions

Amitriptyline is an antidepressant drug. It is specifically a tricyclic drug which is also used for treating certain other conditions as prescribed by the doctor. The working of this drug has still not been adequately studied but it is believed to increase the level of certain chemicals in the brain which elevates moods.
This drug should be used as per prescription rules. Additionally, this antidepressant drug carries an additional leaflet that can be also referred for determining its correct doses. These drugs should be taken for at least 30 days and continued until your doctor prescribes you to stop consuming it. It can be consumed either with food or in empty stomach. While being treated with Amitriptyline avoid consuming any grapefruit or its juices.
Do not miss any of its doses. However, if you miss any of them then consider consuming the missed dose as soon as you remember it. But if the time for the next closes in then it is recommended to skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not double your doses for avoiding complications. On experiencing any of the overdoing symptoms such as hallucination, drowsiness, dry mouths, confusion, constipation, flushing, irregular heartbeats, hyperpyrexia, agitation, etc. consider seeking medical help immediately.
This drug should not be used while being allergic to any of its ingredients or when recovering from any heart disease. Also avoid using this drug if you have used the MAOI inhibitors within the last 14 days. This drug must also be avoided if you are using certain drugs such as macrolide, pimozide, droperidol, cisapride, kitolide and mibefradil. Similarly, this drug should not be combined with other drugs as this can cause you a number of issues that might worsen the symptoms of depression. Consult your doctor before being prescribed for the same if you are pregnant or while planning to do so or if you are breastfeeding. If you have been using or treated with other OTC or herbal medication then inform your doctor before to avoid unwanted complications or for making required adjustments. You also need to consult your doctor if been consuming 3 or more alcoholic beverages per day. Under conditions of heart diseases, liver or kidney problems, thyroid disease, prostate problems, chest pain or difficulty in urination then need to consult your doctor well before being prescribed for Amitriptyline.
There are several side effects associated with it and any change in the intensity should be immediately discussed with the doctor. The most common side effect symptoms include decreased sexual ability or desires, blurred vision, dizziness, drowsiness, diarrhea, headaches, constipation, loss of appetite, sleeping issues, tiredness, nausea and weaknesses. There are several severe side effects also that might affect the patient. These include chest pain, dark urine, difficulty in swallowing or speaking, impulsiveness, aggressiveness, hallucination, tingling or numbness in arms and legs and inability to sit still.
Do not hesitate to ask your doctor any question regarding its dosing schedule. This is necessary for not only avoiding the complications but also for ensuring effective treatment. This drug is recommended to be stored at room temperature and away from direct heat, light and moisture. Also it should be kept in air tight containers under 86 degrees Fahrenheit and away from reach of children and pets.
