When you are down with depression, there will be a sort laziness surrounding you.  You will not be able to indulge in the usual functions, you may not be able to sleep properly, you will not be interested in your usual daily routine.  There will a complete disinterestedness surrounding you.  The reasons for this state of affairs have been traced to anxiety, and anxiety is traced to stressful situations in your life.  The best method to get rid of depression is therefore to get rid of anxiety and stress.  But this is easily said than done.

Since depression takes a toll on your career, life and well being, it is necessary to get rid of it.  The other way which people seek is to look for antidepressants.  As the name indicates Antidepressants work against depression, but most of these antidepressants comparisons reveal their inability to effectively relieve you of depression on the one hand, and on the hazards that come with the use of antidepressants.  Let us examine some of these antidepressant comparisons.

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors known commonly as MAOIs, try to relieve the depression present in an individual by inhibition of monoamine oxidase, which is a intricate enzyme arrangement which metabolizes surplus epinephrine and serotonin. These inhibitors have a negative side to them.  They are capable of inducing fatal problems and thus when used on patients who are already suffering from congestive cardiac breakdowns, or on patients who have been affected by diseases of the liver, it may turn out to be life-threatening to the patients. Moreover, people who are oversensitive to the constituents of MAOIs, it can prove hazardous. At best, these inhibitors could only be the last resort when all other sources of antidepressant medicines have failed to treat depressions.

When you compare another antidepressant, TCAs, which are known to inhibit prominently the re-uptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine, you will find that kind of after-effects which the patient might undergo are almost similar to those of MAOIs. However, the after-effects’ occurrence is much less in the TCAs, when compared to those of MAOIs.   Therefore TCAs are preferred by people suffering with depression.

Among the safe medications which are popular include the SSRIs, which inhibit the serotonin re-uptake. Popularly acceptance of Prozac, based on the above indicates its success rate in treating depression and preventing suicidal tendencies. It also has lesser side-effects.

All the above three antidepressants take about 4 weeks to provide relief from depression, while SSRIs, in view of their safety, are popular, while TCAs are inexpensive and accepted by patients who have not found relief from other antidepressants.  Also SNRIs help keep both norepinephrine and serotonin at the correct level.
