Atarax is an antihistamine drug used for treating symptoms of tension and anxiety. It is also used in combination with other drugs for treating physical illness emerging due to anxiety. Besides, it is also used to itching resulting from allergic reactions and is used as sedatives pre and post anesthesia. This drug works by reducing the effects of histamine that narrows the passage of air in the lungs and lead to inflammation. It also reduces swelling, itching and dry up the secretions from eyes, nose and throat.

The prescribed doses are to be consumed as per prescription rules. The doses may vary depending upon the symptoms and age. If you take any dose of the drug then take it as soon you remember it. If the next dose schedule closes in then consider skipping it and return to the regular prescribed schedule. Never double its doses as these can cause severe complications. The common overdosing symptoms may include low blood pressure or excessive calmness. On experiencing any of the overdosing symptoms, consider attaining medical help immediately.

There are certain side effects of this drug. These are usually unpredictable and any change or developing any intensity one should be immediately referred to the doctor. The most affecting side effect of Atarax is drowsiness which is usually temporary and may disappear within a few days or on reducing the doses. Other side effects may include twitches, tremors, convulsions and dry mouth. Out of these, tremors and convulsion usually occur on overdosing the prescribed doses.

This drug is not intended for long term usages and hence the doctor must periodically re-evaluate the patient’s prescription. Also avoid using this drug in combination with other medications as this could either result in its side effects or may worsen an ongoing issue. Its effects during pregnancy have not been studied adequately. Therefore, if you are pregnant or are planning the same then you should better consult the doctor immediately. This drug could also appear in breast milk and hence consult the doctor to either discontinue the treatment or breastfeeding whichever may seem to be more beneficial.
