Over a long period of time, we are used to slouching, bending, and hunching, acquired from our childhood days, and steadfastly cultivated all along. Many of us are not aware that bad postures lead to back pain. Back pain is not the result of any degenerating sickness. It is not a problem that old age has brought because back pain can attack anyone at any age.

Slouching while working before a desk is common, but such people are damaging their backs, unknowingly. As they bring strain and stress to the slouching position, damage to your back is imminent. Other bad postures in our daily lives include, standing without relaxing the back, in a slouching manner, which stresses neck and back.

We unwittingly adopt some bad postures when we sleep. If you are sleeping on a mattress which does not respect your spine, you are spoiling the natural alignment of spine, which can result in back pain, apart from paining your neck and shoulders.

When damage begins to affect the back, we do not realize and continue with out bad postures, without correcting them. Small but effective movements, through stretching exercises and Pilates, strengthen the muscles, besides correcting alignment of the spine, and tightening the buttocks tone, back and abdominal muscles, and contributing to overall strength of the body.

Back pain is experienced by everyone at one time or the other. No one is exempted from it, as the present day living conditions have hampered right postures in our day to day routine. We are so used to bad postures that they continue to persist even as we tend develop serious conditions like arthritis, crooked alignment of spine, etc. Finally, we may not be able to perform routine chores, as the body refuses to function due to pain. More importantly, we should realize that simple exercises and correct postures could have avoided all this discomfort.

Back pain also brings with it stiffness, tingling, numbing, and burning sensations, resulting in repeated visits to the doctors and at times you may even land up in emergency medical vans, because of back pain, all of which can be avoided if we take precautions to correct our bad postures.

Stretching exercises and Pilates can help relieve your back pain. All that is required is that the body calls for restoration of its alignment and restoration of strength. It is time we are all aware of bad postures and also know how to tackle back pain, if it sets in. Pilates and stretching exercises become your daily routine, you will be avoiding all kinds of medicines, visits to doctors, and more importantly those bouts of pain, which is likely to turn our lives into a virtual nightmare.
