Most of us have experienced the occasional breakout. Especially in our teens when our hormone levels start to go haywire and produce oilier skin and acne as a by product.

There are several ways to reduce or eliminate acne. From the over the counter inexpensive solutions, to the more cost intensive remedies found at spas, salons or your dermatologist’s office.

There are some easy things you can do though to help curb your acne. Let’s look at some of these below.

1) Wipe your face with a clean towel after sweating. Whether you were at the gym, the beach or just suffering the consequences of a hot day; wiping the sweat from your face can prevent pore blockage that can lead to acne.

2) Try not to “pop” your pimples. Squeezing and popping your pimples (as difficult as it may be to avoid) will your cause your skin to produce more sebum. This will cause your breakout to take longer to subside due to the inflammation that can occur. Not only that, but touching your face, especially with dirty hands, can lead to even more acne.

3) Use over the counter acne medication. For some people that suffer from the occasional outbreak, these ointments and creams prove to be a great ally in their fight. They can usually get rid of the blemish within a few short days. However, keep in mind that not all people and skin types are the same and what may work well for one can have an adverse effect on another. Be aware of allergies and keep vigilant of any irritations that may occur.

4) Use creams that contain benzyl peroxide. Many people swear by this method. Keep in mind, however, that this ingredient can over dry your skin and cause further irritation. Use on a section of your skin first to make sure no serious dryness or adverse effects take place.

5) Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize! Washing your face can strip the skin of its natural lipids. Using a moisturizer designed for the skin can prevent the skin from producing additional oils that can clog pores and cause a further breakout.

6) Try to wash your face at least twice a day. Use a non oily or non acidic soap. Washing your face and practicing proper facial hygiene is imperative in your fight against acne.

These tips should help. However, if you have a more serious problem that can be resolved by the above mentioned ideas, consult your dermatologist. Together you can come up with a game plan to combat acne!
