Acne, alternatively called pimples, blackheads, or whiteheads, is a common skin condition that affects a vast majority of adolescents and a number of adults. It is caused by a blockage in the skin pore that turns into a papule. Although mostly found in the face, acne can also occur in the chest, neck, shoulders, and even the back.

Contrary to popular belief, acne is not caused by dirt. The blockage of the follicle happens inside the skin so it is impossible to wash it away. Although a kind of bacteria can cause acne, it is not directly related to hygiene. Other causes include heredity, stress, increase in hormones, exposure to chemical substances, and even drug use.

Acne can be a serious problem among teenagers. It is often a cause of suicide and depression since it greatly alters the appearance. It can be a cause of severe-bullying which can lead to low self-esteem. The effect on adults does not differ much.

Being a very common problem, there are a number of treatments available. In this article, the four most basic treatments will be discussed.

  • Proper diet : Based on studies, people who have acne have lower levels of vitamin A and vitamin E. Intake of food with high vitamin content is highly recommended. Animal liver is a rich source of vitamin A. Carrots, broccoli, and sweet potatoes are also good sources of vitamin A. On the other hand, asparagus, avocado, and eggs are sources of vitamin E.

  • Anti-acne products : There are numerous over-the-counter products that can help diminish or lessen the presence of acne in the skin. The more popular products contain benzoyl peroxide. This substance can unblock the pores and kill the bacteria causing acne. Other forms of treatment available in pharmacies include antibiotics, hormonal treatments, retinoids, and sulphur-based cleansers.

  • Cosmetic remedies : Cosmetic surgery can be done to remove the scars brought by acne. The most famous procedure is called dermabrasion. It is done by literally removing the surface of the skin by sanding. It is a very painful procedure which is why a general anesthetic is required for this. Laser surgery is used to not only remove scars, but also to prevent the acne itself. It burns away the gland that produces oil and kills the bacteria responsible. Another type of method is phototherapy, a process that involves light as a treatment. Like, laser surgery, this method also kills the acne-producing bacteria.

  • Proper acne handling : Lastly, do not ever prick the acne for it can cause further infection and worse scars.
