Bed sores or pressure sores is the condition that occurs due to prolonged bed stay, confined to a wheel chair due to some chronic diseases like coma, paralysis, stroke and other severe injuries. Because of this the blood flow to the skin is disturbed resulting in bed sores. Particularly bed sores are commonly formed in bony areas of the body like hips, heels, back, buttocks etc. Bed sores might also appear in old age people due to lack of proper blood supply and overweight.
Causes:
Bed sores are caused due to:
1: Sitting or lying in single position for a long duration due to severe health disorders.
2. Increased body pressure
3. Unclean bed covers of the patients.
4. Dehydration and poor diet also pave way to bed sores.
5. Anemia
6. Infections due to germs
7. Diabetes
8. Poor blood circulation
9. Rectal or anal diseases
10. Lack of sensation which is not capable of indicating the injuries.
Symptoms:
Most significant symptoms of bed sores are:
- Red color on the skin with irritation.
- Open wounds with pus in severe condition
- Infection in the skin like moisture, bad odor and swelling.
- Discoloration of the skin.
- Tearing or lesions on skin, particularly over bone regions.
Home remedies for bed sores:
Following are some of the advantageous home cures for bed sores:
- Try to maintain clean and hygienic skin condition.
- Eat a nutritious diet and drink plenty of water to avoid body dehydration.
- Regularly alter the position of the patients to avoid bed sores.
- Make use of fine quality ripple mattress to allow proper blood supply to all over the patients body.
- There are several ointments and antiseptic powders available for treating bed sores.
- Vitamin E oil and Aloe Vera paste also can be applied to the affected spots.
- Lysol spray can be used everyday for better relief from bed sores.
- Vitamin A, B, C, E and zinc supplements also can help to cure bedsores.
- Applying turmeric paste to the sores will soothe irritation.
- Calendula cream can be another useful remedy for bedsores.
- It is advisable to give massage to the patient gently to enhance blood flow to all parts of the body to prevent bed sore.
- Germ oil and a paste of slippery elm and comfrey leaves can be directly applied to the sores with cotton for quick relief from bedsores.
- Sandal oil and tea treeoil can be applied over the infected areas for fast heal from bed sores.
- Some herbs like goldenseal, myrrh, gum, Echinacea can be made into paste and used for bedsore treatments.
- Avoid junk foods and meat and include plenty of fiber in daily diet.
- Mix a little sugar and honey and apply this to the bed sores twice a day to treat it effectively.
