Causes and Home Remedies for Burning Tongue

A burning sensation felt in the tongue is referred as burning tongue or glossodynia. Burning tongue may also cause pain in lips, gums and inside cheeks. In this case the burning tongue is also known as burning mouth syndrome. There are both acute and severe conditions of burning tongue. Burning tongue may or may not have taste variations.

Causes:

  1. Yeast infection of the mouth
  2. Hormonal imbalance
  3. Medications
  4. Gastric acid reflux
  5. Nerve damages
  6. Poor built dentures
  7. Vitamin B12 deficiency
  8. Anemia
  9. Unhygienic oral habits

  14. Sensitivity to some food items
  15. Allergy to perfumes and chemical preservatives
  16. Poor chewing habits
  17. High blood pressure.

  22. Chewing tobacco

Symptoms:

1. Feeling thirsty

2. Dry mouth and sore throat

3. Irritation and burning sensation in mouth, lips, palate, gums and tongue

4. Lack of taste

5. Bitter taste in mouth

Home remedies for burning tongue:

  1. Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet to get adequate vitamins and minerals for your body.
  2. Chew sugar free chewing gums for effective cure for burning tongue.
  3. Drops of glycerine can be added to the cotton balls and applied on the affected spot.
  4. Apply lavender oil on the affected skin area. This will reduce pain and heal burning tongue quickly.
  5. Suck a piece of ice to soothe pain.
  6. Avoid chewing tobacco.
  7. Clean your mouth properly after meals and maintain hygiene.
  8. Follow proper chewing habits.
  9. Take vitamins and iron supplements. This will be another excellent home remedy for treating burning tongue.
  10. Practise proper brushing habit and use medicated paste to avoid burning tongue.
  11. Use high quality and comfortable tongue cleaner to clean your tongue.
  12. Avoid coffee, tea and other carbonated beverages.
  13. Drink fruit juices to avoid dehydration of the tongue and to keep your body cool all the time.
  14. Have your meals on time and do not skip meals.
  15. Do not eat very spicy and sugary food items.
  16. Add one teaspoon of honey into a glass of milk and drink this daily to get relief from burning tongue.
  17. Make use of herbal mouth fresheners liquids for gargling. This will also be an effective burning tongue treatment.
  18. Baking soda can be used for brushing teeth to cure burning tongue.
  19. Include egg yolk, milk, liver, broccoli, spinach, parsley in your daily diet to enhance vitamin B and iron in your body. This will help you to get rid of burning tongue problems.
