Causes and Home Remedies For Poison Ivy

Poison ivy is a plant that sources various allergic reactions if you touch its leaves. The colourless oil known as urushiol in this plant is toxic and it penetrates the skin when touched and results in skin rashes. This condition is not contagious and there are several simple remedies to get cure from poison ivy.

Causes:

The main cause for poison ivy rash is the urushiol oil of the poison ivy plant. If you come in to contact with the sap it will give irritation.

Symptoms:

  1. Redness of the skin
  2. Skin irritations
  3. Blisters and swelling
  4. Unbearable itching of the skin

Remedies for poison ivy:

  1. Wash the infected area with cool water. You can also use mild soap for washing. This will clean and protect skin from further infection.
  2. Clean your skin with rubbing alcohol. This will dissolve the toxin oil.
  3. Take the fresh Aloe Vera gel and apply it directly on the affected areas. This will act as an antibacterial agent and sooth the infection.
  4. Apply plantain poultice to the infected part and also you can use peeled banana mash to cool and soothe infection due to poison ivy.
  5. Sprinkle few drops of vinegar on the rashes to get cure from itch.
  6. Oatmeal can be boiled and cooled. Mix it with some baking soda. Apply this mixture on the infected skin to cure poison ivy conditions.
  7. Goldenseal root is an herbal remedy that can be used to remove poison ivy infections.
  8. Include fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. This will supply all the essential vitamins and minerals that will help to strengthen your immune system.
  9. Calamine lotion also can be applied to reduce infection.
  10. Dip a cotton ball in witch hazel solution. This will cool your skin and relives burning sensation.
  11. Mix few drops of astringent solution into your bath tub and take warm bath. This will relieve itching and dry skin rashes.
  12. After washing the rash apply the some turmeric powder over it to kill infectious germs.
  13. Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with one cup of water and use this solution to wash the poison ivy rash. This will dry out the blisters and remove infection.
  14. Apply garlic oil over the affected spot to remove poison ivy.
  15. Coat the juice of jewelweed plant to the skin rashes for quick relief.
  16. Keep yourself hygiene to get rid of toxins.
  17. Wear full clothes while going to the woods.
  18. Dishwash liquid or detergent can be applied to the infected parts and then rinse with cool water. This will give better heal from poison ivy.
