Causes and Home Remedies For Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is referred to the sleeping disorder condition in which the person has disruption of breathing while sleeping; it is also termed as snoring or insomnia. The fact is they do not realize that they have this disorder. Sleep apnea condition makes the sufferer to get lower oxygen due to complete blockage of their air passages. There are two kinds of sleep apnea namely obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. It is must to take steps to control this condition to avoid further risks.

Causes:

  1. Disturbances in breathing naturally
  2. Hereditary factors
  3. Enlarged adenoids
  4. Tonsillitis
  5. Over weight
  6. Smoking
  7. Hypertension
  8. Alcohol abuse
  9. Old age

Symptoms:

  1. Loud snoring
  2. Difficulty in breathing
  3. Dry or desiccated throat
  4. Depression
  5. Morning headaches
  6. Mood swings
  7. Irritations
  8. Disturbed sleep
  9. Tiredness
  10. Poor memory
  11. Feeling sleepy in the morning hours

Remedies:

  1. Sleeping position plays a vital role in getting rid of sleep apnea. It is advisable to sleep on your sides and not on your back. This will allow you to have proper breathing.
  2. Saline nasal spray can be used to avoid nasal congestion.
  3. Use proper pillows and mat for sleeping and change your positions frequently while sleeping.
  4. Avoid smoking and alcohol abuse as they will induce the condition of sleep apnea.
  5. Eat a healthy diet so that your weight is balanced. Avoid junk foods and oily foods as they will make you obese and thus will pave way for sleep apnea.
  6. Practise some form of breathing exercises and other simple exercises like sit ups crunches, walking, jogging, swimming and yoga that will help you to refresh yourself and gives you a sound sleep at night.
  7. It is good to take dinner two hours before sleep. This will prevent snoring and gives you deep sleep.
  8. Avoid using sleeping pills or tranquilizers as they will reduce your throat’s muscle strength and interfere with breathing.
  9. While sleeping elevate the height of your cot to 4-6 inches on the head position. This will help you to prevent sleep apnea.
  10. Follow regular sleep hours to avoid sleep apnea.
  11. You can also use nasal dilator; breathe right strips or nasal spray to keep your nasal passages open while sleeping.
  12. Do meditation to control your blood pressures and relieve you from stress.
  13. You can also ask your physician to conduct a diagnostic test called polyscomnography to measure and record the number of physiologic variables that occurs while you are asleep.
  14. While using decongestants for sleep apnea is it must to get advice from your doctor to know the actual duration for usage.
