Tinea versicolor is a medical condition where the color of certain parts of the skin will start changing and they could be either darker or lighter when compared to the normal skin color. Pityriasis versicolor is another name for this condition, which is caused by a fungus.

Causes of Tinea Versicolor :

Pregnant women, people suffering from Cushing’s disease and those who have just got their adrenal glands removed are highly susceptible to having Tinea versicolor. People who are suffering from malnutrition, burns and those who are consuming steroids for therapeutic purposes as well as oral contraceptives can also be afflicted with this condition. People who have a very weak immune system and those who cannot tolerate severe heat and humidity are also easily prone to catching Tinea versicolor. Once the process of treating this condition has started, then it is advisable to have the bed covers as well as nightclothes changed on a regular basis so that any kind of relapse can be avoided.

Symptoms of Tinea Versicolor :

People afflicted with Tinea versicolor will find that pinkish white or dark brown spots have started appearing on different parts of their body. These spots and patches of spots will usually be found on the back, chest, upper arms as well as the legs. They are also known as hyper pigmented as well as hypo-pigmented patches. There is no specification on the amount and the number of patches, which will be present on the skin of the person. There is a possibility of the infection occurring once again for the same person. But this is not a condition, which will spread easily from one person to the next. The complete health condition of the patient will not be affected in any manner due to this condition.

Treatment of Tinea Versicolor :

There are many ways of treating Tinea Versicolor at home without any kind of medical aid from a doctor. There are many different over-the-counter products, which are available for this purpose. Selenium sulfide shampoo is one of the most recommended methods of treating this condition. Selsun can also be applied on the affected part of the skin at night and it can be removed in the morning. But Selsun can also cause a certain amount of irritation and this can also be a little difficult to apply on certain affected areas like the back.

Clotrimazole and miconazole have also been recommended in order to treat this condition. These are over-the-counter medicines, which should be applied at least ten times in a day in order to curtail the growth of the fungus. These products are also available in tubes and hence they can also be applied very easily.

In serious cases of Tinea Versicolor, the attention and advice of doctors might be required. No form of self treatment at home should be continue for a time period of more than two weeks. The doctor will require some samples of the infected skin in order to make a correct diagnosis. Oral medication or prescription drugs will be given depending on the symptoms, which have been exhibited. Ciclopirox and Ketoconazole have also been recommended in order to treat this condition. Ciclopirox is available in the form of creams; gels as well as lotions while Ketoconazole can be procured in the form of creams and shampoos.
