Measles, known also as Rubeola is a highly contagious disease, caused by a virus, resulting in respiratory infections to begin with. There are vaccines providing immunity from this disease. Measles can be easily communicable to people who are in proximity to affected people.

Measles is a rarity in the United States. If measles strike people who are suffering from HIV, or leukemia or lymphoma, severe complications can be faced by them. Vaccinations prevent malaria attacks.

Causes of Measles

Measles is caused by a virus, known as a Morbillivirus. It is contagious and can be transmitted through nasal or throat sections of infected persons, or contaminated objects. The infected person will feel craving for increased fluid intake. It can also be transmitted through tissues, drinking glasses, hands of infected person.

Symptoms of Measles

Symptoms include cough, redness and irritation of eyes, fever, itching, diarrhea,

Treatment of Measles.

Measles has no particular or specified treatment process. It requires only care to support the affected persons.

If children are affected by measles they should be made to sufficient rest. Since measles is mainly a respiratory disease, a humidifier to decongest and soothe nasal passage and bring down cough is necessary. Fever can be reduced by acetaminophen (Tylenol) pills.

Children should not be given aspirin if they are affected by measles, because it can make the child degenerate into liver and brain diseases called Reyes syndrome.

Measles vaccine, which is part of the measles-mumps-rubella immunizations (MMR) given at 12 to 15 months of age and again at 4 to 6 years of age, can prevent this disease from attacking us.

When affected by virus, allow your child to drink lots of fluids, in the form of fruit juices, water, lemonade and tea. Fluids will help replace the lost hydration in the body, which happens when the child is goring through heat and sweating cycles.

Measles is highly prevalent in certain countries, especially in the tropical and sub-tropical region. Despite the availability of a number of immunization methods, there have been spurts of this disease in certain pockets of the world this is because of the lack of proper implementation of the immunity programs initiated by World Health Centre. Due to lack of control over immunization of newly born children Measles continues to spread and make its appearance in these parts. Prevention, as the adage goes, is better than cure, and therefore vaccines for children, as per the suggested program should be compulsorily administered so that the world becomes a better place to live not only for them, but to all of us.

Once a child gets attacked by Measles, it is necessary to give it enough rest, and be looked after especially as regards cough and nasal complications, so that it can get well soon.
