Stretch marks are a ghastly sight for a majority of the people and everyone likes to take all possible steps to hide them. Though they do not cause any kind of harm or danger to the health of the person, people are much happier when they do not have them. When the skin starts stretching in situations like a pregnancy where a lot of weight gain takes place or when a person loses a lot of weight, stretch marks start appearing on the skin initially in the form of dark lines, which will later turn into lighter lines. It is easily possible to completely get rid of stretch marks but at the same time it is also important to know the reasons for the occurrence of stretch marks.

Causes of stretch marks :

When the skin is made to stretch and it does not return to its normal size quickly, then stretch marks start appearing. The actual process of stretching will start in the middle layer of the skin, which is known as the dermis. The skin will sometimes get stretched in one particular direction for a very long period of time either due to a pregnancy or excessive weight gain or weight loss. The stretch marks appear to be in red or purple color during the initial stages and they will soon disappear over a period of time.

The shoulders, breasts, hips, thighs and the lower back are the most common places where stretch marks will usually be seen. These are the most affected areas when weight gain or weight loss takes place. The type of skin as well as the texture of the skin will also help in determining the severity of the stretch marks. People who have elastic skin are more susceptible to having stretch marks.

The most common reason for the development of stretch marks is during a pregnancy. A lot of women start developing stretch even during the initial stages of their pregnancy while some develop them only during the later stages of their pregnancy. Certain tissues which support the skin and which will help them in the process of stretching will start developing small tears when stretch marks start forming on the skin. But they will not cause any kind of pain.

Symptoms of stretch marks :

Stretch marks will first start appearing the form of red and purple colored lines and soon they will fade into a lighter color. The skin mainly consists of three layers namely the outer layer or the epidermis, the middle layer or the dermis and the innermost layer or the subcutaneous stratum. The presence of stretch marks will usually be seen in the dermis. This is the layer of the skin, which will help the skin to stay in the correct shape.

Treating stretch marks :

Stretch marks will not cause any kind of harm to the health of a person but the simple sight of these stretch marks is so ghastly that people are looking for many methods of treating them and getting rid of them.

1. Plastic surgery is one of the methods of getting rid of stretch marks. This is one method of permanently getting rid of all the stretch marks, which are present on your body. Those parts of the skin, which contain the stretch marks, will be completely removed or cut off. The skin, which is remaining, will be pulled tight. But this kind of plastic surgery cannot be performed on all parts of the body. It is always better to consult a well-experienced and reputed plastic surgeon before getting this kind of procedure done. This is a very expensive and it is also necessary that this procedure needs to be performed at the right time.

2. Micro-Dermabrasion is another method of removing stretch marks. The skin, which contains stretch marks, will be scraped by making use of a special tool, which has been made for this purpose. The epidermis as well as the dermis will be treated and improved in this method of Micro-Dermabrasion. This method will also create room for the formation of some new collagen as well as elastin. But the best kind of results can be achieved by having this procedure repeated for at least ten sessions.

3. Laser surgery is one other method of treating stretch marks. This is a very unique and recent method of removing stretch marks and this should be applied in the early stages when the stretch marks are still developing. But this treatment will not be useful for stretch marks, which have been fully developed.
