Cervical Spondylosis – Some Myths and Facts about this Chronic Condition of the Body

Cervical sponsylosis or cervical osteoarthritis is chronic condition in which extent degree of degeneration in vertebrae become thinner as we are getting older. Sometimes, nearby vertebrae develop rough and small areas on the edge of bone due to which adjacent ligaments, nerves and muscle get irritated which further lead to troublesome symptoms.

Cervical spondylosis usually starts occurring in men and women once they cross their middle age period. Both genders are affected by this chronic condition of the body but it generally appears earlier in men as compared to women.

Mild cervical spondylosis generally does not need any medical treatment or can be amended by conservative treatment such as taking pain reliever or using neck brace etc. However, in severe condition, where excess pressure on spinal cord or nerves, treatment is mandatory which includes surgery or stronger medications, even neck traction.

Cervical Spondylosis- Signs and Symptoms

Severe pain and stiffness in the neck which get worse more and more could be related with cervical spondylosis.  Mild and severe pain can last for month before it improves or becomes chronic. Here some other evident symptoms of cervical spondylosis are also mentioned -

  • Numbness or weakness in the finger, arms and hands
  • Soreness or pain in neck which can spread to shoulder and to arms
  • Severe headache
  • Excessive pressure on spinal cord, numbness or weakness in the legs
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control

Cervical Spondylosis- Treatment

  • Wearing neck brace or cervical collar which helps to reduce irritation to the nerves.
  • You can take anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen so that you can prevent severe pain.
  • Walking or water aerobics may also aid to provide relief from this condition.

Surgery is final and last option to treat this condition. Surgeries are generally depended on the underlying condition of cervical spondylosis.
