Ciprofloxacin Side Effects : Treating Bacterial Infections and Safety Tips

Ciprofloxacin is another addition to the drug range associating treatment for bacterial infection. This drug is also used for slowing down or preventing the anthrax after exposure. This drug is specifically a fluoroquinolone antibiotic which works by killing the sensitive bacteria.

This drug must be used as per prescription suggested by the doctor. This drug normally carries a leaflet that contains its usage instructions. If you have any doubts then consider consulting your pharmacist or health care service provider. These injections are generally taken at doctor’s clinic, hospitals, nursing home or at health care centers. On missing any dose, consider taking it as soon as you remember it. But if the next dose time closes in then it is recommended to skip the missed dose and continue with your regular doses. Never double your dose for avoiding overdose complications. On experiencing any change in the intensity must seek medical help immediately.

There are many side effects associated with Ciprofloxacin. The most common ones include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, lightheadedness, dizziness, blurred vision and drowsiness. These symptoms can worsen if you take other drugs or alcoholic beverages. This drug should also be used with caution and to the full extent of their prescribed period or until the infection completely heals. Anything less could worsen the infection or the bacteria would develop resistance against the drug thereby making it less effective. The prolonged usage of this drug could lead to a second symptom and any signs of it should be urgently discussed with the doctor. Here, it also has to be remembered that this drug is effective only against bacterial infections and not against viral infections.

While being treated with Ciprofloxacin drug one requires prohibiting consuming more of foods and drinks containing caffeine. Consult your doctor on experiencing any symptoms of swelling or pain of a tendon weakening or loosing the ability to use any joints. Also, avoid any exercising regimens until suggested by your doctor. Diabetes patients also require conducting regular check ups for verifying the blood sugar levels. Ask your doctor before making any adjustments in your drug schedules. This drug may also cause you sunburns and being under sun, tanning booths or sunlamps for prolonged durations must be prohibited until you know how to react to this drug. Consider wearing protective clothes or using sunscreens while being under direct heat for longer durations.

During pregnancy or while planning for the same consider consulting your doctor for determining the pros and cons of using Ciprofloxacin. This drug also appears in the breast milk and nursing women should avoid breastfeeding until the completion of the treatment.

Ciprofloxacin should be avoided if the patient suffers any allergic reaction to fluoroquinolone or any other ingredient in the drug. Also, avoid any of its usage if you have used any live oral vaccine for typhoid or take tizanidine. The syringes, needles and the drug itself should be kept out of the reach of children. It’s important to consult the doctor or pharmacist for knowing the correct disposal procedures. Also, Ciprofloxacin should be avoided from any usages if it contain any particles or is discolored or cloudy and the seal appears to be broken.
