A bursa is a sac which contains fluid and which will help in reducing the friction around the area near your joints. When the fluid, which is present inside the bursa, gets infected and swollen, this condition is known as bursitis. The joints, which have been affected due to bursitis, will be very painful and they will also be extremely swollen and it will be very difficult to move these joints. The bursa, which is swollen, can also cause a larger amount of friction.

Causes of Bursitis :

The most common and most well known cause of bursitis is some kind of repetitive impact on a specific region or some kind of serious injury. Age is one more factor, which is largely responsible for the onset of bursitis. As the person grows old, his tendons cannot withstand the same amount of stress and they are easily susceptible to tearing.

A sudden injury can make a lot of blood flow into your bursa. This can cause a large amount of pain and swelling which will mostly take place in the knee. This kind of injury will normally mark the onset of bursitis. The tendons and the bursa will become more thick and swollen after such an injury.

Symptoms and Diagnosis of Bursitis :

  • A stiff and painful feeling around the elbow, hip, knee, shoulder, big toe or any other joints in the body
  • Severe pain and pressure while attempting any kind of movement, which involves the joints

This kind of pain will gradually start becoming worse after long periods of activity. This pain, swelling and tenderness in the joints are some of the factors, which will help in diagnosing this condition. An x-ray will be useful in order to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment of Bursitis :

Patients who have been diagnosed with bursitis will be asked to take lots of rest and many kinds of hot and cold treatments will be prescribed to them. Apart from these non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, bursal aspirations and inter bursal steroidal injections will also be prescribed to the patient. When heat is applied to the joint, it will help in reducing the pain and the swollen joint can also be raised in order to reduce the swelling.

A corticosteroid will have to be injected along with a local anesthetic in order to provide relief from the symptoms of hip bursitis. This kind of treatment can be dispensed at the clinic of the doctor.

Home Treatments for Bursitis :

  • Alfalfa, chaparral and comfrey can be mixed in order to reduce the swelling and also decrease the pain
  • A cloth, which has been soaked in comfrey or mullein tea, can be applied on the region where the pain is being experienced
  • One spoon of cayenne pepper and one spoon of apple cider vinegar should be mixed and brought to a boil and the simmered for fifteen minutes. A cloth should be soaked in this solution and then applied on the affected area. Olive oil should be applied on the skin before this compress has been used.
  • Seawater should be consumed on a regular basis. But patients who are suffering from high blood pressure should not adopt this measure.
  • Linoleic acid is said to be extremely effective on pains in the muscles as well as the joints. This will go to the deepest layers of the skin and provide relief and this can be found in emu oil.
