Dilaudid Side Effects : Narcotic Drug for Treating the Pain and Associating Precautions

Dilaudid is a narcotic analgesic that is prescribed for treating or relieving severe to moderate pain associated with –

  • Hurt attacks
  • Burns
  • Cancer
  • Biliary Colic
  • Renal Colic
  • Injuries
  • Surgeries

This drug must be consumed strictly upon doctor’s prescription. Never alter or double its doses unless without consulting your doctor. In case, you miss any of its doses then consider taking it as soon as you remember it. If the time for next dose closes in then it is recommended to skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Avoid trying catching the missed schedules by doubling the doses.

Consider avoiding this drug if you are allergic or sensitive to Dilaudid or other narcotic painkillers. If you have been affected with any of these symptoms then you should consider informing your doctor before being prescribed for the same. This drug should also be avoided if you suffer any symptoms of uncontrolled asthma or other severe breathing issues.

Overdosing of this drug can further lead to physical or mental dependence. Physical dependence can only occur after using the narcotic drug but often it takes several weeks. Under severe overdosing issues, the patients may suffer from shock, breathing difficulties and heart attack. On suspecting any of these symptoms, the patient must seek medical attention immediately. There are several side effects of this drug that cannot be anticipated. On developing or any change in the symptoms, the sufferer should be immediately referred to the doctor. Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, anxiety, impairment of physical or mental fitness, urinating inability, mood swings, mental clouds, sedation, nausea, restlessness, fear, slowed breathing, sluggishness and vomiting.

Avoid taking this drug while being pregnant unless being directed by your doctor. Drug dependencies may occur in the newborns if the mother had taken narcotic drugs on a regular basis during pregnancy. The withdrawal signs can include excessive crying, irritability, overactive reflexes, tremors, increased stools or breathing rate, yawning, sneezing, fever and vomiting. This drug could also appear in breast milk and consulting the doctor is recommended for nursing women. They may be prescribed for either discontinuing breastfeeding or the treatment whichever may seem more beneficial.

Both liquid and tablet forms of this drug must be stored at room temperature. Also it should be protected from extreme or light heat or cold. The suppositories are recommended to be stored in the refrigerators.
