Nail fungus is a common and unattractive condition that affects both the fingernails and toenails. It is caused by dermatophytes, which is a group of fungi. The nails become discolored and disfigured after prolonged fungus inhabitation, and if left untreated, the nail may eventually fall off.
Nail fungus (especially toenail fungus) can be contracted from gym showers and other public showers, and even from swimming pools, basically wherever the feet are exposed to considerable moisture for extended periods of time. Wearing tight-fitting socks and shoes will also provide an avenue for fungal growth, as moisture is more easily retained in tight-fitting clothing.
There are several easy home remedies that can be done to get rid of nail fungus. Most do not even require a trip to the local pharmacy or herbal store, and even the remedies that do require a trip to pharmacy or herbal store are still easily obtainable.
One of the easiest remedies for nail fungus is to simply soak the feet (or hands, in the case of fingernail fungus) in an antiseptic mouthwash (such as Listerine). Most mouthwashes of this nature have a strong antiseptic which will kill the fungus and leave the nails looking a lot more healthy.
If one enjoys the subject of cooking, there are essential oils which are good treatments. Applying a mixture of two drops of oregano oil and a teaspoon of olive oil to the nails once a day will get rid of the offending fungus due to the antibacterial and antifungal nature of the oregano oil. Using an equal mixture of lavender oil and tea tree oil two or three times a day on the nails is also an excellent treatment for nail fungus.
Another excellent all-around home remedy for nail fungus is apple cider vinegar. Soaking the feet or hands in an equal mixture of apple cider vinegar and warm water for about 15 or 20 minutes will get rid of the fungus if used daily until the fingernails or toenails look healthier. Use this remedy as needed for healthy feet and hands.

Many times, there is no need to strain the budget or go through the hassle of making a doctor’s appointment for the treatment of nail fungus. The most effective remedies are usually already right at home, easy to use, and safe. No poisons, harmful ingredients, or excess expense is necessary, so go ahead and throw out that over-the-counter spray or cream. Using home ingredients that are used everyday are very effective, less expensive, and cause a lot less harm to the environment. For a few pennies, one can have a guaranteed home remedy and start propping up those beautiful-looking feet!
