The nails are a window to the body’s health. By studying the nails, one can start determining whether there are other factors or conditions which may be affecting the health. From malnutrition to lung disease to congestive heart failure, the nails are a veritable picture of one’s overall health.
There are a few home remedies for nail growth that can help the nails look their best. Extra dietary calcium (such as eggs and other dairy products) will help keep the nails strong, as will calcium supplements. Soaking the nails in warm oils, like olive oil or almond oil, for about 5 minutes will also encourage the nails. Rubbing the nails with a lemon rind will help keep the nails fresh-looking and help with brittle nails.
Hand and foot creams will also help keep the nails moist and encourage nail growth. Using the creams daily (especially at night, before bed) will also keep the nails healthy. Taking a daily vitamin or biotin will also encourage the nails to grow.
Supplements which contain fatty acids are one of the best sources of nutrients for the nails. A twice-daily dose of 500mg of evening primrose oil or black currant oil will produce great results in about six to eight weeks. Flaxseed and walnuts are both good sources of fatty acids which will keep the nails growing like they should. Eating more fish such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel will provide a very rich source of healthy fatty acids for spurring nail growth. If the extra servings of fish are unaffordable or not readily available, fish oil supplements may be taken instead. Two or three grams of fish oil per day will keep the nails in good health the fish oil will also help keep the hair shiny as well.
Aging also takes its toll on the nails, and nail growth does tend to slow down as we age. But no matter how old we are, we can still keep our nails healthy. Soak the nails in lemon juice every day for a good fifteen minutes. If one is not allergic to it, soaking the nails in iodine for a half hour will also help. The stain from the iodine can be removed with an acetone.
Keeping our nails healthy and looking great really does not need a lot of effort or expense. Delicious dietary
additions and/or a few supplements are all that it really takes to have great looking hands and feet. So sit back and enjoy that cup of blanched lemon grass tea and smile at the way it is helping you sustain a healthy nail growth.
