Hair Transplant Surgery : Understanding Micro Grafting
In the past few decades, hair transplant surgeries have undergone a lot of advancements. The growths in science and technology have also positively affected hair transplant procedures. Earlier methods included hair plugging methods that were not much satisfactory. This often resulted in hairs sticking out of the head in bunches that appeared much like a doll’s hair. But today hair transplantation methods include more complicated procedures that result in more natural looking hairs. This has been possible mainly due to a procedure called micro grafting.
Earlier it was very hard to accomplish natural looking hairs through hair transplant procedures. With the emergence of micro-grafting techniques a much natural looking hair transplantation has become possible. They appear less artificial and reduce the chances of being spotted as being transplanted. This also improved the public view and opinion about hair transplant surgeries.
A number of hair transplant surgeries today involve micro-grafting techniques. This is possible because surgeons have evolved new ways for extracting hairs. A micro-graft normally holds 3-4 hair follicles. Earlier grafting techniques included around a dozen hair follicles. This procedure results in a much natural looking hairs. The newly grafted hairs appear much alike the nature intended it to be and the difference is hard to spot.
An important aspect regarding micro-grafting is that during its surgery normal micro-grafts are transplanted around the frontline and edges. Then mini-grafts, containing three to eight shafts, are used for transplanting at the further back around the scalps. These provide the hairs fullness around the areas where have been transplanted. As such mini-grafts along with micro-grafting give the hairs a more natural looks and prevent it from appearing thick or overgrown. This also prohibits the chances of being spotted as unnatural. Hence mini-grafts play an important role in succeeding micro graft hair transplantation.
When a person decides to go for mini grafting after attending a micro-graft surgery then would require to shave off the micro-grafts from the areas where mini-grafting would be done. This would make the mini-grafts appear completely unnatural. However, the micro-grafts around the frontline and leading edges will help it in having a much richer or full looks. Hence, this procedure, despite having a few complications does affect the surgery on the whole.
Previous techniques of hair transplantation included an instrument known as trephine. These were used for cutting circular grafting of around 2 to 5mm and were then inserted into the bald areas. Today surgeons use a more advanced instrument called multi-bladed knives. These new cutting tools enable surgeons to cut long and thin stripes of donor tissues. These stripes are around an inch wide and five inches long. The surgeon pulls these strips holding the hair and skin together and then stitches it together.
Final procedures of micro-grafting include dividing the donor tissues into individual grafts. This is done using a stereo microscope. The highly skilled team of surgeons group these individual grafts into mini-grafts including eight-shafts and micro-grafts which normally contain single or multiple shafts. These groups of grafts are then moved to the recipient sites for being transplanted. The resulting combination of mini and micro grafting provides natural looking hairs.
Hair transplant surgery would not have been the same without micro-grafting. It has helped a number of people who were going bald. It also has helped in providing a more natural looks than previous surgical methods. It is considered a successful discovery in the hair transplantation scenario.
