There are some very useful home remedies for a yeast infection. Many people develop this condition at some point in their lives; some people seem to be almost chronic sufferers putting up a constant battle against this ailment. Bacteria which naturally inhabit the body are the cause of yeast infections; various practices allow for the florid growth of the bacteria until the resulting symptoms manifest themselves as a yeast infection.

The infections can be caused by having intercourse with someone who has a yeast infection, by having too little lubrication during intercourse, the use of spermicides, douches, and even those hormones prescribed for menopausal symptoms, to name a few. The infection is accompanied by a burning and itching sensation, vaginal discharge, and odor.

The easiest home remedy to help prevent a yeast infection is simply to sleep in the nude. The extra ventilation helps keep the area dry so that bacteria do not start to thrive in a moist environment. Loose clothing, unscented feminine products, and the use of natural lubricants during intercourse will all help prevent a yeast infection from occurring.

If one is not fond of over-the-counter medications for this condition, there are some alternative treatments which will help clear up the infection. Douching with a mild vinegar and water mixture will treat the infection. A warm bath with either salt or vinegar will also help alleviate the infection.

A very important thing to remember when dealing with a yeast infection, is to try to keep the blood sugar in control. People with diabetes are highly likely to contract a yeast infection, as the yeast feeds and thrives on sugar. With diabetes, higher sugar counts pose a greater risk of getting the infection, since that is just more nutrition for the yeast.

Another home remedy consists of dipping an unscented tampon into some plain yogurt and then inserting the tampon will clear up a yeast infection within a day or two. There is even a tonic for this ailment made from mixing grapefruit seed extract and olive leaf extract into a glass of water. Taking vitamin C will also help the body fight off this type of infection. A diet that includes several foods that are high in vitamin C (or even taking a supplement) will help the body fight off the infection. Fruit and several vegetable are great sources of vitamin C.

It is best to have the yeast infection investigated by a doctor or similar healthcare professionals before trying a home remedy (especially if one contracts a yeast infection less often than other women do. This way, the physician can determine for sure if it is a yeast infection before embarking on a home course of action.
