When the body is trying to kill the bacteria which have invaded the system, it produces heat to destroy them, which is called as fever. The body through the hypothalamus, body’s thermostat, recognizes the invasion on the system by the bacteria, and turns the heat on them, as a defense mechanism, followed by the sweat to cool the body down. Normally our temperature is around 97 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit, which varies during the day, being lower in the early morning and higher in afternoon. When temperature is above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, you have fever.
A fever in itself is not a sickness, it is only a symptom of an infection in the body caused by bacteria and thus the symptom should be treated along with the underlying cause. We should ensure that during fever your body does not get dehydrated, as the temperature goes up, the fluid consumption is also more. Therefore fever calls for replenishment of body fluids.
Home Remedies for Fever
- Replenishment of fluids is must, and hence drink consumes at least 10 glasses a day, more than average, while children should take at least 6 glasses of water. Water can flush out the bacteria, and therefore it is necessary that you intake lots of water.
- Poppy seeds mixed in boiled water should be used for steaming the body, will induce sweat and bring down the fever. This water can also be used as a drink.
- Fever can be treated with common Basil (Tulsi) leaves, boiled in water and consumed with honey added to it. A decoction made with twelve grams of Basil leaves, boiled in half a liter of water, can be consumed with half cup of milk, one tsp sugar and a quarter tsp of cardamom powder, twice a day.
- Dry roasted fenugreek seeds should be powdered and boiled, and after straining add some ghee and consume it.
- Tea made out of boiling linden tea flower can be consumed when hot.
- Make tea from willow bark tea, and drink it slowly in small sips. It has qualities of aspirin.
- Place an ice pack on the forehead when you have temperature, to cool down temperature. Similarly, temperature can be brought down by placing a soaked washcloth on forehead.
Since fever is not in itself is a disease, and is only a symptom of other disease, it is necessary to recognize the bacteria, and get rid of them so that you find a permanent solution. Fever in itself is a defense mechanism of the body, and thus while trying to bring down the fever, it is necessary the causes should be treated as early as possible, so that the condition does not recur.
In extreme cases of high fever there may be convulsions in children, if they are unable to cope up with the high heat. It is necessary to naturally, by any of these methods, especially cold packs on forehead, so that convulsions in children doesn’t set in.
