Home Remedies For Gas

Gas is an unpleasant, embarrassing, and uncomfortable digestive problem. Eating too much, eating the wrong foods, and drinking a lot of carbonated beverages will all cause bouts of gas. In any case, one needs to get rid of it.
There are several home remedies that are in every kitchen spice cabinet that can be used to treat an episode of gas. Parsley, dill, fennel, and coriander can all be used to combat a gas problem. Eating caraway seeds is another good remedy that has been around since the time of the ancient Egyptians. Adding these herbs to food or steeping them in a tea is a good home remedy. Eating watercress is good for general digestive health.
Several types of mint are also good home remedies for gas, and this includes spearmint, peppermint, sage and basil. Spearmint is milder than peppermint, and is thus more often given to children. Chewing spearmint gum or eating peppermint candy will help settle the stomach and clear up the gas.
There are also several ways that one can prevent gas as well. Eat food slowly and make sure that air is not breathed in through the mouth. Experiment with the diet to see which foods are the culprits for causing excessive gas, and then try to avoid those foods as much as possible. Avoid eating while lying on the couch or in bed. Breakfast in bed is a wonderful treat, but one needs to make sure that one is sitting upright in bed while eating. Some foods are well-known gas producers, and should be avoided if possible: Brussels sprouts, beans, cabbage, and broccoli. Lactose intolerance will also cause a large amount of gas, and it will be necessary to avoid dairy products as much as possible if one experiences lactose intolerance. The older that a person gets it is generally more difficult for them to digest the lactose in dairy products. Many older people cannot digest lactose very well, and for that reason, they tend to avoid foods such as milk, ice cream, cheese, and other dairy foods that contain a lot of lactose.
There are a lot of thing that one can do at home both to treat the problem of gas and to prevent it. One also needs to pay close attention to the diet and try to determine which foods have an adverse effect on the digestion, and which ones do not end up producing gas. After making that determination, one can then better plan meals so that one’s digestion does not suffer uncomfortable (and potentially embarrassing) side effects.
