Home Remedies For Healthy and Long Hair

Having long hair can be both a joy and a chore. Dryness, breakage, split ends, sun damage, hair dryers, and a lot of the products that we use every day to try to keep our hair looking great all contribute to the chore part of having long hair. Many of the products that we use are also expensive, and we typically spend several hundred dollars a year on hair care. On the other hand, there are some everyday things at home that can be used to make our hair looking great, and all of them are fairly inexpensive.

Long hair needs careful attention simply due to its length the longer the hair, the more susceptible it is to breakage and other damage. Simply over-brushing the hair (remember the old 100 strokes a day advice? Forget it) will end up breaking the hair and causing split ends. Always make sure to run a wide-toothed comb or a hair pick through dry or wet hair first instead of just ripping through it with a brush.

If the hair is already suffering from breakage, split ends, dryness, or damage from hair dryers, straighteners and curling irons, a homemade oil treatment may be just the ticket to better-looking hair. A simple and easy home oil treatment consists of an egg mixed in with a few tablespoons of honey. After applying the egg/honey mixture, wrap the hair up in plastic (or even use a plastic shower cap) and leave the hair wrapped up for about a half-hour. Other home remedies which will deep-condition long hair include plain yogurt, mayonnaise, and olive oil.

Swimming is a favorite activity for millions of people, but chlorine can be a real detriment to the hair. Chlorine will make the hair dry and rough. Wetting the hair with plain water before going into the pool will help prevent the amount of chlorine that is deposited on the hair. Further protection against chlorine damage can be done by adding a small amount of conditioner to the hair before swimming. One can also use some spray-in, leave-in conditioner as well.

After swimming, it is a good idea to rinse the hair with plain water. Shampooing the chlorine out of the hair will be easier if some baking soda is mixed with the shampoo. A good process for taking care of long hair (or any length of hair) after swimming is to shampoo the hair with a mixture of baking soda and shampoo, condition the hair, pat dry the hair, then use either a hair pick or wide-toothed comb. If using a hair dryer is preferred, it is better to use a low setting and focus more on drying the ends of the hair.
