Home Remedies for Laryngitis – Causes & Symptoms

When your voice box also known as Larynx is suffering from inflammation, the condition is called as Laryngitis. Laryngitis is of two types, acute and chronic. Acute Laryngitis lasts only for a couple of days, and does not warrant serious Medicare, but if it is a chronic laryngitis, which can last a few weeks, it has to be treated with antibiotics or other medications.
Causes:
Laryngitis can happen due to straining your voice for prolonged periods. Inhaling smoke fumes, or viral infections can cause this condition.
Symptoms of Laryngitis:
Symptoms of laryngitis begin with mild sore throat, fever, dry throat, itching and voice hoarseness.
Remedies:
There are simple home remedies for laryngitis, which can bring relief from the symptoms connected with the condition. These remedies includes
- Lemon Tea – Most of the professional singers use Lemon tea to get rid of hoarseness in the voce. Lemon tea has lot of tannic acids, which can relieve the inflammation of the tissues in the throat. Warm Lemon tea should be taken at least thrice during a day, to drive out mucus from the voice box.
- Hydration – Keep your larynx hydrated, to prevent it from getting dry, by consuming 10 to 12 glasses of water, which should be of normal temperature. This can prevent chronic laryngitis apart from providing immediate relief for throat irritation.
- When you are suffering from laryngitis do not consume alcoholic drinks, because alcohol causes dryness and irritates your larynx.
- Gargling with salty water is commonly used. Most of the people use salty water for gargling with intention to get rid of irritation. Whereas using salty water at the time of laryngitis will quickly dry up the throat. It is important to avoid gargling that may smack your vocal cords due to vibrations. This will also result in increased pain and irritation.
- Steam – Inhaling steam at least thrice during the day is recommended to people suffering from laryngitis. Inhaling steam directly into the throat clears the air passage apart from relaxing the larynx. It makes talking and breathing easy and comfortable.
- Do not talk loud, – this is the dictum when you are suffering from laryngitis, as it may severely damage larynx. When you are suffering from laryngitis, keep silent, or reduce your talk to normal pitch and tone. This doesn’t mean that you should whisper whispering only strains your vocal cords, in comparison with normal way of talking.
Smoking should be avoided of you want get rid of the condition quickly. Avoid completely cigar or cigarette smoking, so that your throat and larynx are not irritated.
