Loose motions, also known as diarrhea or loose stool, is an annoying and embarrassing problem. Several factors can contribute to having loose motions, such as poor diet, too many laxatives, too many liquids, parasites, bacteria, and viral infections. It is very important to quickly determine the cause of loose motions, as the condition can very rapidly lead to dehydration and the loss of important vitamins and minerals that the body needs to stay healthy. It is strongly recommended that a physician be consulted if the loose motions are thought to be the result of food poisoning or either a bacterial or viral infection, or other intestinal condition such as irritable bowel syndrome or diverticulitis.

There are several home remedies which can be taken to alleviate loose motions. One of the oldest and best a home remedy for loose motions is buttermilk. Buttermilk will aid the body in fighting bacteria and germs in the intestines. Most dairy products will help to curb loose motions, and milk and cheese are also effective.

Cooked carrots are another good remedy for loose motions. A carrot soup is also effective, plus the carrots contain a lot of good vitamins which will help the body recover from the loss of nutrition caused by the loose motions. Plain toast and a mint tea are also good treatments.

Yogurt, pomegranates, apples, and potatoes are all good remedies as well. For a child’s loose motions, it is recommended that an apple be cooked and sprinkled with a little bit of nutmeg. A pinch of salt with some lemon juice in a glass of water will also help. Boiled papaya is another good remedy. Even rubbing ginger juice on the abdomen is a good cure. The juice of four lemons with both sugar (or honey) and salt combined together in a glass of warm water has been known to be a quick and easy cure for loose motions.

Most of these home remedies will also help rid the body of at least some of the bacteria which may be causing the loose motions. It will be best in severe cases to seek the counsel of a physician or other health care provider in case the body is so dehydrated that it is difficult to get a home remedy started. In cases like this, it is urgent that the body be rehydrated as soon as possible before most of the body’s nutrients are lost. Rehydrating the body and replenishing vitamins and nutrients are of the first order when trying to overcome the problem of loose motions. This can be an easy condition to cure, as long as the body has not yet lost too many nutrients and water because then it will be more difficult in the beginning to cure it.
