There are several home remedies for prickly heat, which is caused by the blockage of sweat glands from excessive perspiration. The under-developed nature of their sweat glands makes this condition more prevalent in children and infants, but it occurs commonly in adults as well.
Some of the home treatments for prickly heat are very simple, and it is good to remember that it is also necessary to cool the body on the inside as well as on the outside in order to treat it. Drinking chilled water and fruit juices, as well as eating chilled fruits will help cool the body from the inside. A cool bath will help cool the body on the outside and soothe the irritation and the rash.
One of the easiest home remedies for prickly heat is to simply apply a cold wet compress to it. A small towel soaked in cold water, wrung out, and then applied to the rash will provide immediate relief from the heat, itch, and irritation. Another very easy home treatment is to make a paste of either flour or cornstarch and water, and apply that to the rash. Let it remain on the rash for about a half hour and then wash it off by taking a cool bath. This same remedy can also be made with Fullers Earth instead of flour or cornstarch if desired. Any type of aloe vera gel can be used as well to help alleviate the irritation.
A tea made from fresh gooseberries is also a helpful remedy for prickly heat. Let one or two handfuls of gooseberries soak overnight in a pot full of water. The berries will have softened by morning. Mash up the gooseberries in the water and then strain the berries out of the water. Add sugar to it if desired, and drink the water. This method alone is supposed to take about a week to clear up the rash and irritation, but it can be combined with any of the above remedies to make it more effective.
Other home remedies for prickly heat include applying a paste of sandalwood and rose water to the rash, and using talcum powder or baking soda on the irritated area as well. All three remedies will help soothe the rash.
It is also a good idea to try to prevent prickly heat from happening. In the summertime, wear looser clothing that will allow air to pass through and keep the sweat glands from clogging. Try to keep yourself well-ventilated, such as by opening windows for a breeze or using fans to move the air around. Use a towel to wipe perspiration off of the body so that it does not accumulate and start clogging the sweat glands. These guidelines will help prevent prickly heat from becoming a problem.
