While arthritis is chronic inflammation of joints, psoriasis is a skin condition, typically manifesting through red inflamed scaly patches on the skin. Both the conditions usually occur simultaneously in a majority of cases, even as psoriasis first affect the person and then joints get inflamed, and some times arthritis can manifest first and skin conditions later. When both the conditions are associated, we have Psoriatic arthritis. Rarely, even after 20 years of having had arthritis, psoriasis can develop. If psoriasis follows psoriatic arthritis, even diagnosing the sickness can be difficult.
Usually both men and women, who are 40+, get affected by Psoriatic arthritis. It manifests through inflammation of joints, but it can also result in swelling of skin, lungs, heart, kidney, eyes, and several other body tissues.
Causes :
It is an autoimmune disease, which manifests through faulty response from the immune system of the body. Sometimes, genetic and environmental reasons can lead to this condition. Prolonged inactivity is an open invitation to psoriatic arthritis, even as the affected parts become stiff.
Symptoms :
- Like any other arthritic condition, psoriatic arthritis is typified by knee, ankle and feet joints inflammation. Only a few joints are swollen at a time, even as these joints become red, painful, and hot.
- Spondylitis manifests, because Psoriatic arthritis, affects the spine. In some cases, it can very speedily damage the joints, which is a rare form of the disease, known as mutilans.
- Inflammation of the tendons and cartilage may also be caused by Psoriatic arthritis.
- Usually the medicines for anti-inflammation are prescribed by doctors, to reduce pains in the joints.
- But it is recommended that diet and regular exercises are the best way for getting rid of the psoriatic arthritis symptoms.
- Heat or cold compressions in the affected areas relieve the pain, but this is dependant on the condition of the inflamed parts.
- Exercising with low weight twice a week, to make your muscles stronger and improve joint mobility is recommended for psoriatic arthritis patients.
- Moving joints and keeping them stationary when holding the weights, which are known as Isotonic and isometric exercises, are also helpful.
