Vomiting is an unpleasant event. Retching, ralphing, call it what you will, it is no one’s favorite pastime. There are several home remedies for this activity, such as ginger tea, which are effective and time-honored favorites. It is generally recommended not to fill the stomach with a lot of food soon after vomiting, as doing that tends to worsen and perpetuate the stomach upset.
Only light drinks should be taken after vomiting, and these include water, teas, flat cola if tolerated, etc. If no more unpleasant stomach upset has occurred for a few hours, it may be good to try to take in some light foods, which include rice, bananas, plain or lightly buttered toast, jello or soup. If any of these light foods still upset the stomach, stick to the light fluids until such time as one feels as though light food may be taken.
The kitchen spice cabinet is a good resource for vomiting remedies. Teas made from spices such as cinnamon, ginger, mint, clove, and fennel will all help settle the stomach. Steep any of these spices in hot water to make a tea. If desired, they can be sweetened with honey.
The kitchen cupboard is another good resource for vomiting remedies. A vinegar tonic made from two or three teaspoons of vinegar in a glass of water will help ease stomach distress and aid in neutralizing whatever irritation remains in the stomach. Rinsing out the mouth a with a quarter-cup of water mixed with the same amount of vinegar will help after a bout with stomach upset and freshen up the mouth, helping to get rid of the vomit taste that remains in the mouth.
Another good remedy for a child’s bout with vomiting is to mix together a quarter- or half-teaspoon of ginger in some apple juice and dilute it with some water. This can also be frozen in ice cube trays for later consumption, and they can be made into popsicles for the little ones. Sweetening a vinegar tonic with some honey will also be a good treat for them, as will warm apple slices that have a little powdered ginger on them. Most kids love warm apples, it is a comforting treat for them. Sucking on a piece of peppermint candy or melting some peppermint candy in hot water and then drinking the warm water is also a tasty remedy for a child’s upset stomach.
Once one has figured out the cause of the vomiting, it is time for the cure. Sometimes it may be best to first seek the advice of a healthcare professional, especially if it is suspected that the upset stomach has its origins in food poisoning or other serious health issues.
