How Can You Treat Swollen Tongue?

The tongue helps us grinding the food. Besides, it performs multiple functions out of these one is to make us achieve the first digestive breakdown. It is considered one of the strongest muscles in our body. However, at times, due to certain factors, individuals suffer from a swollen tongue and some of them may be:

Allergic Reaction

The most common cause of tongue swelling is generally seen in the people allergic to certain types of food such as cinnamon, seafood and any kind of nuts. Allergic reaction is soon to be triggered in such individuals.

Underlying Oral Condition or Disease

People who have gingivitis or some other oral condition are generally seen to be affected with the complication of swollen tongue.

Canker Sores

Also referred to or known as heat sores these white crater shaped sores are though usually seen in the cheeks but sometimes they appear under the tongue to cause the swelling.

Trauma to the Area

The most common cause of swollen tongue is to accidentally bite your tongue which results in the swelling of tongue.

The Treatment for the Swollen Tongue

First check out your condition if you are still able to breathe and talk without any difficulty, use the  following tips to help lessen and alleviate the swelling in your tongue:

  • First and foremost thing to have anti allergic medication prescribed by your doctor.
  • When you’ve a swollen tongue, it is almost difficult for you to swallow your own saliva so the salty and sour saliva-producing foods should be avoided altogether.
  • In order to get the swelling decreased, put a few ice chips inside your mouth which will help cooling the temperature inside your mouth and reduce the tongue swelling.
  • Further complication can be avoided by observing the proper oral hygiene.

In case you’ve pain with swelling, you will have problem chewing your food and you don’t have the same appetite. In such a situation, choosing a liquid diet or soft food is a better option but only if you tolerate it.
