Inflammation in the vocal box of human body is commonly referred as Laryngitis. It causes unpleasant, hoarse voice and in severe cases partial or complete loss of voice. In mild cases laryngitis is self diagnosed. It also causes dryness and redness within larynx lining along with stringy mucous between the vocal cords.
Viral infection is considered to be the main factor of this inflammation. Infection usually takes place in the upper airway of the vocal cords. It is however sensible not to confuse laryngitis with sore throat. Apart from the primary cause of laryngitis, voice abuse such as yelling is considered to be the secondary reason behind the inflammation.
Now- a- days smoking is considered to be the main culprit behind the disease. This is due to the fact that smoking tobacco lowers the pitch of voice by increasing the mass of the vocal cord.
The most widely used remedy for treating the inflammation within the vocal cord is sucking on sweets and lozenges. It is also advisable to avoid the places where there is the presence of irritants like smoke or dust.
Intake of warm tea with lemon is considered to be the most traditional ways of subsidizing the effects of the inflammation. Tea contains tannic acid which acts as a soothing agent, whereas lemon helps in clearing the mucus to bring back the voice to the normal condition.
Increasing the intake of water helps in lubricating the larynx which therefore acts as a barrier to the inflammation. It is also wise to breathe in the hot and steamy air. This practice helps in relaxing the vocal cord. Adding honey to the lemon water helps in curtailing the symptoms of the inflammation.
Gargling with slat water is a strictly prohibited. It not only dries the throat but also facilitates an increase in irritation. Sometimes using a humidifier during night is also fruitful in taking care of the inflammation.
