Everyone wants to have smooth, attractive, kissable lips. At times, though, that is not always possibleĀ cold, windy weather, too much exposure to the sun, vitamin deficiencies, smoking, and a host of other factors take their toll on our lips.
There are some very easy ways to smooth out those lips and make them healthy again. An easy way to do this is to wear a little bit of glossy lipstick or some unflavored lip balm. Both of these are especially effective in cold weather, as they provide a barrier to the cold and the wind. Applying some aloe vera gel to the lips in the summer will provide relief from overexposure to the sun and ease any associated pain.
Ensuring that one’s body is properly hydrated will help prevent the appearance of dry, cracked lips. Be sure to drink plenty of water and try to avoid any alcoholic beverages, as alcoholic beverages tend to dehydrate the body and exacerbate the condition. Water and juices are both good choices for keeping the body hydrated. It is also a good practice to avoid a lot of caffeine, as caffeine is a diuretic and will further dehydrate the body.
Vitamin A is also essential for healthy maintenance of the lips. A daily vitamin or a diet rich in green leafy vegetables, carrots, and tomatoes will help keep the skin (and hence the lips) healthy and in good condition. Rubbing a slice of cucumber on the lips will also soothe and refresh them. Applying honey or olive oil will also provide a good amount of lasting moisture for relieving dryness and cracks.
Severely dry, cracked lips should be treated with either petroleum jelly or an aloe vera gel until enough moisture has been absorbed that the lips are no longer painful and movement is eased. If no sufficient relief is found, it would be a good idea to visit a dermatologist in order to rule out any conditions which may be an underlying cause of the problem. One may also be well-advised to visit a regular physician to better rule out more serious causes, such as infections, drugs, and diseases such as macrocytosis (the enlargement of red blood cells) and Sjogren’s syndrome (an autoimmune disease whose symptoms include dry mouth and dry lips).
After the elimination of possible disease, any and all of the above home remedies for dry, cracked lips are effective at providing relief. A healthy diet and proper hydration are essential. Keeping the body healthy will naturally keep the lips healthy as well, and following any of the home remedies mentioned in this article will definitely augment the care and well-being of the body and keep those lips kissably smooth.
