Methods of Treating Insomnia

People who have problems while trying to sleep and those who find it difficult to have a sound sleep for long periods of time are usually suffering from insomnia. There are many different kinds of insomnia.
- Sleep Onset Insomnia - This is also known as delayed sleep phase syndrome. This happens mainly because the person sleeps late and due to this he finds it difficult to wake up early.
- Psycho Physiological Insomnia - This mainly occurs due to some kind of worry or psychological problem and the person finds it difficult to sleep due to this.
- Idiopathic Insomnia – In this kind of insomnia, the nervous system of the person completely loses control of the pattern of sleeping and waking up. Due to this people find it difficult to sleep for very long periods of time in their lives
- Insomnia in children -Children suffer from two main types of insomnia namely setting sleep disorder and sleep onset association disorder.
- Altitude insomnia - This kind of insomnia only occurs for short period of time and this is also accompanied by symptoms like headache, fatigue as well as loss in appetite.
Causes of Insomnia :
- Alcohol - Many people believe that the consumption of alcohol helps in putting a person to sleep easily. Normally people either go to sleep or pass out after consuming large amounts of alcohol. But the consumption of alcohol on a regular basis can have a very negative effect. People who suffer from pre-existing medical conditions like blood pressure, indigestion, kidney problems as well as heart problems are likely to suffer from insomnia if they keep drinking on a regular basis. Alcohol should be avoided for four hours before going to sleep.
- Anxiety - There are many people who have the tendency to worry a lot of about some thing, which is happened, or some forthcoming event. There are some people who cannot sleep for a few days due to some causes of worry. But people who are finding it difficult to sleep for long periods of time due to anxiety and worry should make sure that they consult a doctor. The person might require a combination of therapy as well as medication and counseling in order to set things right.
- Stress - Stress is an ailment due to which people all over the world are suffering. Many people are not able to sleep for a long period of time due to stress either at home or at the workplace. Many famous studies have stated that stress and insomnia are closely related problems and one cannot exist without the other.
- Depression - This is one of the most reasons for the occurrence of insomnia. People who are depressed have a major source of fear and anxiety and there are certain things, which they cannot sop, worrying about. This worrying does not even stop at night when it is time to sleep and this is the main reason as to why people find it difficult to sleep and they start suffering from insomnia. The body and mind both start becoming very weak.
Symptoms of Insomnia :
The symptoms of insomnia are also dependent on the kind of insomnia, which is present. People having transient insomnia will have symptoms, which will last for only a few nights. People who have insomnia symptoms for more than three weeks are suffering from chronic insomnia. Primary insomnia is when people find it difficult to sleep at night and they keep waking up many times.
Treatment for Insomnia :
Pills and medicines are being used to treat a wide variety of sleep disorders. But a lot of factors need to be taken into consideration before prescribing any kinds of pills or medications. There are many kinds of over the counter treatments as well as prescription pills which can be used for treating insomnia. These medications are known as hyptonics and they are useful in treating insomnia. But they need to be used only for a short period of time.
