Halitosis is a medical term, which is used to describe a condition where the person is suffering from bad breath. Many people have become the object of personal jokes due to their bad breath. But many people do not realize that halitosis is a warning signal of some other health problem in the body. This problem should be identified immediately and the required medical attention should be given.
Reasons for Occurrence of Halitosis :
- Improper Care for the Mouth and Teeth – People should understand the need to take care of their mouth and teeth well. They should learn the importance of cleaning their teeth in order to avoid halitosis as well as other dental problems. The presence of food particles, bacteria, yeast, plaque and many other similar things is likely to create a ground for halitosis. Cleaning the teeth and mouth is not something, which usually requires medical assistance.
- Tooth decay or oral infections - People who maintain their mouth and teeth well might still have a reason to be suffering from halitosis. This could also be due to tooth decay. A dentist will have to be consulted in order to find the solution to the problem.
- Pre-existing Medical Conditions - Any pre-existing disease or even the everyday diet of the person can be the reason for the occurrence of halitosis. The medication, which has been prescribed for some other medical condition can also be the reason for the occurrence of bad breath. The doctor might have to perform certain tests in order to determine the actual cause of halitosis.
Mouth odors, which can cause Halitosis :
- Periodontal – This odor emanates from the crevicular fluid, which is present in between the teeth or the periodontal pockets
- Nasal - This odor comes from the nose or the nasal cavity
- Dentures – This odor comes from false teeth or dentures
- Tongue - This odor comes from the back part of the tongue, which is also known as the dorsum
- Smoker’s breath – This odor comes from the mouth of a person who is a chain smoker
Brushing, flossing, scraping – Regular brushing of teeth is very essential in order to keep bad breath at bay. A toothbrush with soft bristles should be used in order to brush your teeth twice in a day. The inner, outer as well as the top surfaces of the teeth should be brushed.
Fluoride floss should be used to perform the process of flossing. The floss should be applied in a back and forth motion between the teeth and not snapped between the teeth. The floss should be applied to all the side teeth as well as the gum line. Many people forget to scrape their tongue after brushing. This will help in cleaning up all the bacteria, which is the main cause of bad breath. A toothbrush can also be used in order to scrape the tongue.
Diet to Avoid Halitosis :
- Consumption of at least twelve glasses of water in a day.
- Consumption of fruits, which contain a lot of vitamins, minerals, as well as fruits.
- Consumption of fresh green leafy vegetables.
- Reducing the consumption of dairy products as well as proteins.
- Reducing the consumption of coffee.
