Cholera is an acute form of diarrhea, which occurs when the intestine has been infected by the Vibrio Cholerae bacterium. The infection can be mild or severe depending on the circumstances and the symptoms. In the last century, many industrialized nations have not experienced an outbreak of cholera but this is still common in Asian countries like India as well as parts of Africa. The sanitation and water systems are quite advanced in countries like USA and there is no threat of cholera there. But people who are frequent travelers should be aware of how this disease is spread and how this can be prevented.
Transmission and Causes of Cholera :
Food and water, which has been contaminated by Vibrio Cholerae, are the main sources through which cholera can be transmitted. There are two ways in which the virus can enter food and water, which is through contaminated faeces or in a natural manner. But normal casual contact with a person who has been infected with cholera will not spread the disease. Other methods through which Cholera can spread are:
- Water, which has been contaminated, as well as food items like raw shellfish as well as uncooked fruits and vegetables are some of the places which can prove to be breeding grounds for Vibrio Cholerae
- Water in public wells which has been lying still for a long time can also be easily contaminated
- Fruits and vegetables, which have not been peeled and washed, can also spread the infection
- Seafood like shellfish, which has not been cooked, is likely to create room for contamination
Symptoms of Cholera :
- Diarrhea
- Cramps in the abdominal region
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Dehydration
The loss of body fluids due to dehydration can also lead to the death of the person. Some people die within a few hours of contracting the infection.
