Cold sores are blisters, which appear mainly at the edges of the lips as well as other locations like the neck, cheek, nostrils as well as the fingertips. They can also be present on the gums or the roof of the mouth. But many people make the mistake of confusing cold sores with canker sores. More than ninety percent of the people transmit the herpes virus, which is responsible for cold sores.

Symptoms of Cold Sores :

It could take anywhere between 10-30 days for the symptoms of cold sores to heal. Some of these symptoms are:

  • An itching and tingling feeling
  • The specific area becomes swollen and blisters, which look like pimples, will start appearing
  • These blisters can sometimes break in order to display large open sores
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Swollen lymph glands
  • Yellow scab, which forms on the sore

It might take 2-3 weeks for the symptoms to appear and sometimes the symptoms will be so mild that the person will not be aware that he or she has been infected. The virus will be present in the nerve ganglia, which lie below the skin. They will then travel to the surface of the skin and start multiplying.

Treatment of Cold Sores :

A lot of over-the-counter creams and ointments are available which will help in treating cold sores. They will help in providing relief and comfort but they will not make the sores heal faster. The medicine for fever and headaches can be used in order to treat fever, headaches and swollen glands.

Ice can also provide a lot of relief from the pain and the heat and they will also make the virus completely dysfunctional. The wound should be kept completely clean with the help of a swab and a cotton ball.

Cold sores are extremely contagious and the puss, which comes from the broken sores, will contain the herpes virus. A normal and casual touch will also be responsible for making the virus spread. In case the virus comes near the eye, it can cause a corneal virus. This can damage your vision on a permanent basis.

Extreme care and precaution should be taken to ensure that the infection does not spread to other members in the family. Hands should always be kept clean and the wounds should only be touched with the help of a tissue or cotton ball. Clothes, towels and bed sheets should be kept separately.

A lot of new treatments have been devised in the recent past, which will help in curing cold sores. They will help in curing cold sores very quickly. But not all these treatments can be used on every person since they cannot be effective with everyone.
