What is Smelly Vaginal Discharge- How to get rid of?

Do you know what the main causes of smelly vaginal discharge? Smelly vaginal discharge is generally caused by bacteria called “Vaginosis”. Bacterial vaginosis leads to several other bacteria forms to breed inside vagina. The bacterial growth is the main cause of smell in vaginal discharge. It was previously called as Gardnerella Vaginitis. The changed name indicates that women are affected by vaginosis have various types of bacteria in her vagina which grows to their optimum size.

Vaginal walls of women consist of small glands, which release small quantity of liquid that keeps the vagina cleaned. The fluid is considered normal only when it is thick, of white color and without a pungent smell. The fluid texture becomes thick when a woman is menstruating. It also happens when she breast feeds or is involved in any kind of sexual intercourse.

In normal discharge there is no smell but it sometimes smells bad; the pungent smell in the vaginal discharge is an indication of vagina being infected.  Bacterial vaginosis can be easily identified with this smelly discharge from the vagina. But, it isn’t always that women with bacterial vaginosis have smelly discharge always; a few women infected with this don’t have any smell in their vagina.

Sometimes bacterial vaginosis also occurs due to excessive use of vaginal sprays or on account of Lactobacilli present inside the vagina or it can be due to the growth of anaerobic bacteria and swelling inside vagina. In some cases, it also occurs due to sexual intercourse with many partners, in some cases, smoking also causes this.

So, when undergoing through any treatment using antibiotics, it is necessary to have full treatment and get complete relief from bacterial vaginosis otherwise bacteria may reappear. It can also be cured by antibiotics or gel, pills or by vaginal cream that must be applied for eliminating the smell.
