20-30% of women all over the world face the women’s issue on fibroids. By the time most women reach the age of fifty, over 80% of the women in this age group would have been confronted with the women’s issue of fibroids. Fibroids or uterine leiomyomata are tumors or growths within the walls of the uterus, which consist of muscle cells and other tissues. These can be present either on the inside or the outside of the uterus. Most of the fibroids which are found in women are usually benign and do not contain any cancer cells. Fibroids can be in different sizes. They can either be very small like a pea or they can be as large as a melon. Many women are completely unaware of the presence of fibroids in their body.
Women who are usually in their fertile period or their childbearing age will normally have the tendency to develop fibroids. Most African-American women are highly susceptible to developing fibroids. They are usually found to have fibroids at a much earlier age when compared to women of other nationalities. Women who are grossly overweight also have a tendency to develop fibroids and the risks of developing a fibroid are much lower when the woman has already delivered a child.
Women having fibroids will not experience any symptoms and this is the main reason why many women are unaware of the presence of fibroids. Certain women could experience mild symptoms like severe bleeding during menstrual periods. Sometimes the fibroids can be so large that they could press against any organ in the body and they could also interfere with the normal functioning of the other parts of the body. There are many women who experience cramps due to the presence of fibroids in the body. There are many women who feel like their stomach is full. Many women who have fibroids experience back pain as well as pain during sexual intercourse. There are also many women who are faced with the urge to pass urine quite often.
Women who have fibroids and who experience severe bleeding as a result of the presence of these fibroids could also suffer from anemia. Anemia is a condition, which exists due to the lack of the right amount of iron in the blood. Women who suffer from anemia always feel weak and tired. Sometimes fibroids can be an obstacle for women who are trying to conceive. Fibroids can also cause a miscarriage and lead to the onset of premature labor.
Doctors are still unable to name the reason for the onset of this women’s issue called fibroids. Many theories have been put forward for the reason for the occurrence of fibroids. But most people involved in the research regarding fibroids say that there are many different factors, which are responsible for the presence of fibroids. They could be hormonal factors, genetic factors as well as environmental factors. There have been cases where the fibroids start shrinking after menopause but this will not happen all the time.
